PTSD and Trauma

PTSD and Trauma

Life can throw a number of unpleasant situations and events at you. Some of these can weigh heavily on your mind and lead to recurring stress, anxiety, and even Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) that affects various aspects of your life. Rather than facing these mental health issues alone, know that Dr. Thomas Jackson and the rest of the team at Desert View Health, serving La Quinta in person and California online, are here to help you.

Understanding the Signs

Whether you're a survivor of a traumatic event, you've witnessed a loved one pass violently, or you lived with a parent with a substance abuse problem, you could feel the effects of it on your mental health. And these are merely some of the events or experiences that can lead to the development of PTSD and other trauma-related mental health issues.

Some symptoms of PTSD to be aware of include:

  • Intrusive thoughts
  • Reliving the distressing memories
  • Flashbacks
  • Nightmares or disturbing dreams
  • Avoiding thoughts of the event or places/situations that remind you of it
  • Blame
  • Guilt
  • Anger
  • Memory problems related to the event
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Irritability or anger

You could also experience dissociative disorder, anxiety, depression, or substance abuse as a result of trauma.

Getting the Help You Need in La Quinta, CA

You aren't in life alone, so don't ever think the feelings you're going through are something you must deal with on your own. Our team has extensive experience and can identify the signs of a mental health issue and will guide you through the appropriate steps to deal with the trauma in a healthy way while managing the symptoms.

Talk therapy is often helpful because you can learn to identify the unhelpful thoughts and behaviors associated with the event or experience and replace them with positive ones. Dr. Jackson also helps you develop habits for overall better mental health.

EMDR is another treatment we use for PTSD, anxiety, depression, dissociative disorder, and other conditions associated with trauma. It's a way for you to process a traumatic memory so it won’t cause such an intense response when something triggers it. The therapy will begin with you picking a certain feeling, sensation, or thought associated with that event or experience, although you won’t have to relive it or describe it in detail. A mental health specialist will perform some form of bilateral stimulation and discuss positive beliefs or thoughts to reprocess the memory.

Dr. Jackson at Desert View Health, serving La Quinta, CA, in person and online, offers EMDR and talk therapy to help with PTSD and other trauma-related issues.
